Instructors who normally collect work that is difficult to produce digitally (e.g. drawing, sketching, equations, music notation) are working against a new set of challenges when pivoting instructional modalities to online.

We've consulted with our campus experts to come up with a few ways to do an approximation of what you might do in a classroom, and how to collect student work that is not produced digitally.

If you usually draw or write on a whiteboard:

Grab a webcam and hook it up to your computer to record yourself writing on a whiteboard in your office or at home.
If you don't have a whiteboard large enough to write out equations, consider using a white sheet of paper with a dark pen or marker, and create a set up like this one here.

If you walk students through worksheets on an overhead:

consider filling out one worksheet as a model and then annotate it with numbered steps; scan it, and then upload it to Canvas.
Create a video of yourself verbally walking students through the steps, and typing in the answers on your worksheet so students have an idea of the time it takes to complete the activity.

If you need to share music notation (or specialty software) that students may not have on their computers:

Consider hosting & recording a Blackboard Collaborate Ultra session and sharing the application window while students meet with you
Pre-record short (less than 5 minutes) snips of your
Export the file as a PDF to share it in a Blackboard Collaborate Ultra room and annotate using the tools in the session

If you ask students to "turn in" drawings and sketches or if you would like students to show their work:

Create an assignment in Canvas and ask students to submit pictures of their work.
- There are a few apps that might help students submit legible pictures of their work: Adobe Scan is a free one available for iOS and Android devices, but students can also submit pictures of their work from their devices' camera.
  - Ask students to ensure that their cameras/devices are oriented in a way that will make it easy for you to view/read/comment on their work.
  - CamScanner is one free app that students can use to take pictures of their work
  - Adobe Scan is another free app that recognizes the corners of their documents and auto-magically crops them.
If you're not keen on using Canvas to ask students to submit work, set up a One Drive folder and share it with your students (if you're okay with students seeing each other's work);
- remember that any feedback that you give back to students should be private and not included in a OneDrive folder.
Ask students to email you their homework as an attachment.

If you ask students to create a portfolio of their work:

Ask students to create a folder in OneDrive for your course and to share the folder link with you. The student can store pictures of their work in the folder and then add some type of reflection or statement for each piece in the portfolio.
Ask students to create an ePortfolio from within Canvas. They can upload photos of their work or link to it if it's already stored in a folder in OneDrive or Google Drive. Each student has a 100 MB storage limit, so the ePortfolio tool itself is really only helpful as a place to pull in existing assignments from within Canvas, or as a place to collect disparate links.
